Supporting Students with School Refusal: From Functional Assessment to Intervention

About this live event

School refusal impacts academic progress and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. This presentation will examine the complexity of school refusal behavior and outline the school psychologists’ role in implementing interventions to increase school attendance and engagement. Warning signs, risk factors, and protective factors for school refusal will be discussed. Interventions will be described following a multi-tiered system of support, with the primary focus of the presentation on tiers 2 and 3. Participants will have the opportunity to examine case studies.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will describe characteristics, warning signs, and risk factors of school refusal behavior.
  • Participants will examine assessment procedures and tools for identifying the functions of school refusal behavior.
  • Participants will identify evidence-based interventions that align with the assessment of school refusal behavior.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.

Live event Instructor(s)

  • Courtney Huguenin, NCSP

    Courtney Huguenin, MS, NCSP is the NASP Delegate for New York and a member of the NASP Communications Committee. She has been a school psychologist at Connetquot High School for the past nine years and previously worked as a special education teacher in New York City. Courtney earned her MA in Psychology in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and her MS in School Psychology from St. John's University. She is a certified PREPaRE third edition trainer, a certified instructor for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, and a trainer for Suicide Safety for Teachers and School Staff. Her professional interests include advocacy, crisis prevention and response, suicide awareness, school refusal, and school-based counseling.

CE Process Info

Each professional is responsible for the individual requirements as stipulated by his/her licensing agency. Please contact your individual licensing board/regulatory agency to review continuing education requirements for licensure renewal. Please note: You must attend "live" (in real-time) for the duration of the training to earn CE credits.

Before the event, you will receive an email from CE-Go with access to the virtual event. After the event, you will receive access to your evaluation and continuing education certificate via a personalized "attendee dashboard" link, hosted on the CE-Go website. This link and access to the virtual event will be sent to the email account you used to register for the event.

  • National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)

    NYASP Is approved to offer NASP CPD credits to individuals who attend webinars where NASP CPD is offered (NASP Approved Provider #1021). Attendees must be present for the entire presentation and complete an evaluation form when the session is over to obtain the CPD credits.

  • New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP)

    Any sessions that are not NASP CPD sessions are available for New York Associaton of School Psychologists (NYASP) continuing education hours. Certificates of attendance will be available in your Dashboard and will list all sessions that you selected you attend. You can also track your attendance on your own for submission to outside agencies or organizations (e.g. for NCSP Category A credits: Attending Workshops, Conferences, In-service training, or Category H: Self Study) for webinars you attend live or recorded.
